Love your insights! I read every post. Even though this was framed as a "need a job quick" situation. The strategies outlined here can be easily adapted to more longer term thinking. And it is best to avoid hasty recruiting if it can be avoided! Let's say you are relatively happy in your job. It's useful to ask yourself "what kind of opportunity would I leave for?" "What would I do and for whom?"

In this case you probably don't want 60 companies, or even 10. You want 1-3 in my mind. These should be companies where you feel strongly about the current leadership and how your talents could bring value, and you should know a relatively narrow set of roles you are interested in. Just as you recommend, you should network and info interview to lay the groundwork. You should also set Linkedin Job alerts with carefully selected sets of words!

Recruiting for my current role started with me calling the recruiter and telling her I had been waiting a year for this role to open!

This article is the cat's meow! Great stuff! Thanks for the effort of putting this together. I am showing it to everybody as syllabus for career coaching. Totally loved every word of it.

Networking is definitely the untapped territory and the way to do it. I would also add a proven tip: when asking for an info call, also offer to come on-site for an in person informal conversation. I did that a few times. Having face time then gets you way ahead of the people who "only" did the info phone call. Once on premise, you will also likely be introduced to several other people, some of which may interview you later on.
